The NLVS free health clinic serves as a comprehensive medical care facility dedicated to serving the uninsured and underinsured of Chicago in primary and secondary prevention of chronic medical conditions and also training future health care professionals by providing an educational setting to learn and practice clinical skills.
In response to the pandemic, NLVS made the difficult decision to temporarily suspend in-person clinic operations. Teams of physicians and medical students continue to check-in with patients regarding their health and well-being and assist them with medication refills through the phone. Sensing an unprecedented resource crisis, we also started a GoFundMe to raise funds to support the community we serve, many of whom already live below the poverty line and are disproportionately affected by the pandemic and stay-at-home orders. We will use the funds raised to purchase non-perishable food items and essentials for our uninsured and underserved patients.
In 2002, NLVS began its own NLVS Health Education Program, which provides preventative health guidance on topics including diet, nutrition, exercise, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, and domestic violence. Information is delivered in a variety
of settings, such as schools, shelters, and free clinics.
Over the entirety of this program, we have helped many patients through this program. The program is a multi-disciplinary joint effort of people, including physicians, residents, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, students, and translators
One of the largest fundraising events is a Gala held every year to raise funds to support the charitable efforts of our organization. It is an important time for students, physicians, faculty and community members to gather together and celebrate the annual successes and growth of the non-profit organization. Throughout the evening, attendees can participate in a silent auction where they bid on business-donated items to benefit the NLVS organization. In addition to the fundraising part of the event, the Gala is a fun evening with great Indian food, an open bar, and dancing.
